Must do and see in Vanves

Vanves is a town in the department of the Hauts-de-Seine. It is located in the region Île-de-France, in the district of Antony, south of Paris. Vanves is only three and a half miles away from a center of Paris.

1. Fort de Vanves

Fort de Vanves

The fort of Vanves was built in the middle of the nineteenth century. It serves as military penitentiary. In 1848, during the big protest because of closing the national workshops, hundreds of workers who demanded "bread and work" were imprisoned here. During the 1870 war, the fort was surrounded by the Prussians, but until the capitulation in January 1871 it stood up to the German forces.

The Priory was built by the Benedictine Dom Bellot architect who designs it between 1930 and 1936. A set of buildings arranged around a cloister and a chapel nave. To cover the shell reinforced concrete construction, the architect uses Flemish brick bound by cements of different colors.

The chapel was built in 1862. The latter, brick colors and stone is flanked by a small turret decorated with drawings of geometric shapes.

2. Church of Saint-Rémy

The church is dedicated to St. Vanves Rémyand St. Genevieve. The church of Saint-Rémy has undergone many architectural changes. Some think it was originally made of wood, before being rebuilt in stone in the thirteenth century. After the Hundred Years War, the choir and the last bays of the nave are fully rebuilt in the Gothic style of the fifteenth century. Built on a rectangular plan, the church comprises a nave of six bays in length, terminated by a three-sided choir. The architect Monnier completely rebuilt the church from 1871 to 1874. Today consists of three parts, the tower, belfry and spire.

4. Monument aux morts

In 1920 the town asked the architect and sculptor Robert Le Bout to design this monument near the garden of the city in the memory of soldiers who died during the First World War. His project was built in 1924. Monument aux morts has good positions on the coast consisting of bunkers that housed soldiers bodies. . Today this is a single site that has no known equivalent in the world. Some of these monuments are more than 20m deep.

This is the area with a very high population density. It is also an area with a lot of historical artifacts and monuments.
