What to do in Szabadszálláson

Szabadszálláson is a small town with 6000 inhabitants, 80 kilometers south of Budapest.

1. Villa Gereb (Geréby kastély)

This is pretty historic and recently renovated building. Made in 1890, according to the plans of architect Imre Kusztosa. This building is the former villa of the family Gereb. This building has long been place for health facilities. Since 2005, this building has housed a home for the elderly.

3. Reformed Church (A református Temple)

The church originates from the sixteenth century. According to documents, the church was build in 1620.In 1729, the church was renovated and expanded to the east side. Based on the current design, the building has received in the period from 1747 to 1759 as a baroque church without towers. The tower was added in 1771. on the west side of the church. The tower is currently in three bells one of which is made more in 1852. The church has a remarkable organ with 16 registers that are the work of the famous manufacturer of organs from Salzburg, Luisa Moser.

5. National park Kiskunsági (Kiskunsági Nemzeti Park)

National park Kiskunsági (Kiskunsági Nemzeti Park)

The surface of this national park is 3905 acres. Park can be visited only with the permission and accompaniment of an authorized guide. The park was established on January 1, 1975 and is the second largest national park in Hungary. A unique feature of this park are the salt lakes. This environment has a unique flora and fauna. Visitors can see several rare bird species such as the bittern and marsh.

2. Farmhouse (Tájház)

The farmhouse with its collection of artifacts kept the memory of folk customs and traditions of the region. Visitors to it can gain a sense of what the lives of people living in this area. Visitors can taste the delicious roast from the oven made the traditional way, and gain insight into the secrets of folk crafts. The house was built about 200 years ago. The building is triangular in shape and is surrounded by 1,104 square meters of land belonging Sandor Szucs, an entrepreneur who has bought and renovated the building in 2001. The renovation of the house is used exclusively original period furniture and artifacts from these periods.

Building the City Assembly held constant memorial exhibition in honor of the poet Sandor Petefia which is born in this place 23 years ago.

The place is best known for its natural resources. Szabadszálláson is surrounded by several areas of the National Park Kiskunsági.
