Mt Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall is display center around 3 km south of the city center. Price are very affordable, guides are very friendly and they can provide so many useful informations about Mt. Unzen disaster and its consequences.
5. Hara Castle Ruins
Hara Castle was the Christian castle and it was assaulted by the administration with assistance from the Dutch. Castle was ruined and today, it is very popular tourist destination.
2. Mt Unzen Nature Park
Mt Unzen Nature Park is Volcanic Area Geopark where you can enjoy nature and its true power. Volcanoes were always small nature wonders, and every tourist like to see at least something related to lava eruptions and similar things.
4. Mizunashi-honjin Fukae Road Station
Mizunashi-honjin Fukae Road Station is located on Route 251. Approximately 4 km south of the city center, there is a walkway for tourists. It has parking area for resting, and many restaurants where you can have a drink or lunch.
The city is the site of the Shimabara Rebellion in which Christians who were unsatisfied with horribly high expenses and persecution of Christianity battled to recover control of the region. They were unsuccessful, but this event is very important in town's history. These days Shimabara has high touristic value, and it is great place to visit.
