Saint-Dizier is a town located in the Haute-Marne department in the Champagne-Ardenne region in north-eastern France. It is a small town with only thirty thousand and nine hundred inhabitants. However, this town has a long history because it was established as fortified settlement in the thirteenth century.

1. Old Castle

The town of Saint-Dizier was built as a fortified town that should protect the whole Haute-Marne area. It was surrounded by walls with about ten towers and a castle that belonged to the lord Gui de Dampierre. The castle was built as a real stronghold. Today only the tower entrance of the castle and four other towers remained from that period. The old castle now houses the offices of the sub-prefecture. They moved there in 1959. However, this is still a very impressive building. Also, it is a part of the heritage of the city.

Hôtel de ville de Saint-Dizier (The City Hall) is located in the historical heart of the town, on the square of Aristide Briand. Today building of City Hall was built in the nineteenth century after the great fire of 1775 that destroy many buildings in the town. The building was renovated recently and is in a good shape.

5. The Monument

On Aristide Briand place is an imposing monument to the 1544 siege. The town was invaded during the battle between the Emperor Charles V and Charles I in 1544. The resistance was formed against Charles V in the town, so this monument is dedicated to the victims of that war. The monument is built of white marble and bronze.

2. Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Assomption

Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Assomption (Church of Our Lady of the Assumption) is located in the center of this town. This is a fairly large church whose construction was initiated by Gui de Dampierre. The church was finished in 1202. However, it was largely destroyed by fire in 1775. Today, it is restored and only the gate tower and the chapel of the tomb remained from the original construction. Inside, visitors will find great organ among other artifacts.

4. Timbered house Parcollet

Everywhere across the town of Saint-Dizier visitors may see the houses with wooden sides also called half-timbered houses. These houses are part of the local architecture and they are really interesting. Real example of this style is the old house called "Parcollet" that is located in the town center. The construction of its facade dates back to the fifteenth or sixteenth century.

It also has a good geographical position. It is located on the half way between Paris and Strasbourg and only five miles from beautiful Lake Der-Chantecoq. These facts are the reasons why this town is so popular among all kind of tourists.
