5 things to do and see in Rambouillet

Rambouillet is located at fifty kilometers of Paris and on a halfway between Versailles and Chartres. It is close to the Regional natural park of the haute valley of Chevreuse. This is a very old town and very interested place for tourist.

1. The castle of Rambouillet

The castle of Rambouillet

The construction of the castle of Rambouillet started in 1375. After the revolution, Napoleon made it restored. He spent there his last night before leaving for Sainte-Hélène. The President Felix Faure made of Rambouillet the presidency summer residence in 1896. Since then Rambouillet remains one of the President of the Republic residence, specially used for International Conferences and honorable foreign visitors.

3. The Hôtel de Ville

The Hôtel de Ville, the former Bailliage was built in the second part of the eighteenth century by the architect Jean-Jacques Thévenin and on the request of Louis XVI. It was given by Emperor Napoléon I to the inhabitants of Rambouillet to serve as their City Hall.

The new Saint-Lubin church was built in the second part of the nineteenth century, between 1868 and 1871. Its architect was Anatole de Baudot. It keeps the spirit of the nineteenth century and it is very breathtaking.

2. The King of Rome Palace

The King of Rome Palace

The Palace of King de Rome was built at the end of the eighteenth century on the order of Louis XVI to be used as a Government Palace. It was restored by Napoleon who made it the residence of his son the King of Rome. The Palace of the King of Rome in Rambouillet has been classified as a historic monument and has now been used for temporary and various exhibitions.

4. The Monument Américain

The Monument Américain

The Monument Américain (The American Eagle Monument) is situated at the south entrance of the town. It is located at the site of two ambushes in which seven American soldiers were killed, on 16 August 1944. The monument was built in 1947. It bears the inscription: "In memory of the American soldiers fallen for the liberation of our region in August 1944". The names of nine American soldiers are inscribed on a plaque on the monument.
