What to do in Pombal

Pombal is a small town on the west coast of Portugal. Its 16,000 inhabitants are sometimes dealt mainly with fishing, while still oriented towards tourism. This place is a popular summer resort and the center of the whole region. Pombal was founded in the twelfth century by the Knights Templar. That's why they like this place and the whole area full of historical monuments and interesting sites.

1. Pombal Castle (Castelo de Pombal)

Pombal castle is one of the best preserved military forts in the country. It is built on a dominant position on the rocky shore of the river arunca. This castle of the Templars had a significant role in the defense of the region. Although the exact date of construction of the castle is unknown, scientists believe that it was built in the twelfth century. In the seventeenth century the Count, who was the owner of the castle Melhor reformed this ancient castle and adapt it to your home. The total size of the rooms in the castle is three hundred square meters. The original walls of the castle were later reinforced with ten domes and the outer ring of walls. Castle Pombal suffered major damage during the Napoleonic Wars, so soon after that was abandoned and left to decay. The castle was declared a national monument in 1910 and forties of the twentieth century and fully restored. Outside the walls on the south side lie the ruins of the old church of Santa Maria do Castelo.

Carmo Church is located at one end of the square, the Marquis of Pombal. This church was built in 1760. In the nineteenth century it was the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the third row of the Virgin.

This impressive religious buildings built in baroque style. Inside the church is the tomb of the Marquis of Pombal who was buried here in 1857.

This monument is located in the municipal garden. The monument is made of bronze and the work of the famous author Ernest Korodia. The statue was erected in 1907 and is one of the first statue erected in this period.
