Things to do in Palermo

Palermo is the city in the south western Italy on the island called Sicily. Palermo, with its million inhabitants, is the capital of Sicily and the fifth largest city in Italy. This is a very ancient town. It was established by the Carthaginians in eight century before Christ.

1. Palazzo dei Normanni

Palazzo dei Normanni

The Palace of the Normans is the Royal palace of Palermo. Inside the palace are the portraits of the viceroys and presidents of Sicily. On the first floor of the Palace is the Palatine Chapel was dedicated at the behest of Roger II in St. Peter the Apostle. It is a perfect example of coexistence between artistic cultures and religion. Its beauty is magnificent.

3. Fontana Pretoria Fountain

Fontana Pretoria Fountain

This Fountain, or "Fontana Pretoria" is the most beautiful element on the Plaza Pretoria. It was designed by the Florentine sculptor Francesco Camilliani in the middle of the sixteenth century. The white marble fountain dominates the square. Around the fountain are magnificent buildings such as the Praetorian Palace and the Church of Santa Caterina.

5. Plaza of the Kalsa

The Piazza della Kalsa is the heart of the Kalsa quarter. This neighborhood was built during the Islamic rule and it is one of the oldest in Palermo. At the beginning, this was the fortified city where the emir and his ministers lived. There are many artifacts here in Arab-Norman style.

2. Church of San Domenico

This church of San Domenico has been built from the middle of the seventeenth century until the 1726. It consists of three naves and has many works of art. Inside the church is located the famous Museo del Risorgimento.

4. Teatro Massimo

Teatro Massimo

The Teatro Massimo is the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe. The building was dedicated to the King Victor Emmanuel II. It was built in the late nineteenth century in a neoclassical style.

This area changed its rulers during its history and every one of them left its traces in Palermo. That is the reason why this town is full with artifacts and historic monuments so it is very interesting for tourist.
