5 things to do and see in Moncao

Moncao is a place with twenty thousand people in the far north of Portugal. The city is formed royal decree in the thirteenth century. Like any frontier town, had a turbulent history and is full of interesting sites for tourists.

This castle is located a few kilometers away from Moncao-according to Arcos de Valdevez. The building was built in the nineteenth century in the unconventional style and surrounded by a beautiful garden with lush vegetation. The building has a beautiful façade and is bounded by the four towers. There are luxury rooms with valuable paintings and frescoes, as well as a chapel and theater. The palace was declared a national monument.

2. Lapela Tower (Torre da Lapela)

This imposing tower is all that remains of the ogrmone fortress built by King Afonso Henriques, the granite slab along the left bank of the river Minho. The tower is 35 meters high with a width of 22 meters and a wall thickness of three meters. The building is very solid constructions, made of hewn stones that fit perfectly with no traces of cement. The rest of the fort was the bomb King Joao V to use stones to repair the fort Moncao.

4. Square Antonio Marques de Oliveira (Antonio Marqués de Oliveira Square)

Garden is located just a few meters from the sculpture erected in honor of a hero Moncao. It was named by the priest Antonio Marques de Oliveira, who lived here during the period from 1958 to 1990.
