Things to do and see in Melun

Melun with its forty thousand residents is the major city of the Seine-et-Marne department. Melun is situated about fifthy km from Paris. It has a great natural environment and many tourist attractions for visitors.

1. Notre-Dame Collegial church

Notre-Dame Collegial church

The Notre-Dame Collegial church was built between 1016 and 1031 on the foundations of an old church. The Roman parts are built in XIth century. The crypt under the bedside of the church Notre-Dame, is the oldest part of the building, as the archstones and narrow arcs. The vaults in the double sides were destroyed in XVIIIth century and the canons were dispersed with the French Revolution. Today this church is restored, many artifacts are returned and it is opened for visitors.

3. Saint-Sauveur

Saint-Sauveur

The church and the crypt were built at the second part of the Xth century. The priory was transformed by new owners into workshops and dwellings at the XIXth century. The today owners opened it for the visitors.

The rooms in this museum display the uniforms, equipment and weapons of the soldiers (constables) through the ages and how they have been represented in popular culture (as puppets, lead figurines or china models, etc.)

The Castle Grüber was founded as the brewery in 1816.The brewery was an important part of the daily life in this region. The Grüber castle was preserved by the family.

4. Île St-Étienne

Île St-Étienne is the small island in the River Seine, now has a great looking botanical garden. At this location King Robert the Pious built a castle which is known as the «white queens», because of its long white veils.

Melun was founded as a Gaulish town Meledunum. In the Middle Ages the castle of Melun was a royal residence of the Capet Kings.
