Things to do in Laon

Laon is the capital and largest city of the Aisne department. It has little more then twenty six thousand inhabitants. It is a medieval and walled city. Laon has more than 80 classified historical monuments, including the famous Cathedral Notre-Dame located. But, there is a lot more to see and do here. Here is the list:

1. Notre-Dame Cathedral

Notre-Dame Cathedral has been built in the period between 1150 and 1230. This is one of the most remarkable early Gothic buildings. It offers a very rare synthesis of different inputs that define the essence of this style. His sculptures and stained glass are particularly interesting. Stained glass windows are also one of the most beautiful and the most important examples of the twelfth century style.

3. Hotel du Petit-Saint-Vincent

Hotel du Petit-Saint-Vincent

This building was the old shelter of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Vincent Laon. It is a remarkable building built at the first half of sixteenth century. It has the characteristic of civil architecture of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance stairs in work-decorated serving wing court. Beautiful caves on three floors and a chapel located above the entrance to the courtyard are also remarkable.

During the past centuries, city of Laon has been standing as a natural fortress ready to face wars and invasions. The upper town is surrounded by eight kilometers of ramparts, embellished with numerous towers.

2. Bishop's Palace

The palace of the former bishops Dukes of Laon has retained the charm of the Middle Ages. In this former palace of the bishops of Laon, there are two interesting chapels built in the second half of the twelfth century. The great hall was built in the thirteenth century and is very beautifully decorated.

4. Knights Templar chapel

In the twelfth century, one of the leaders of Knights Templar built the Romanesque chapel. Featuring an octagonal nave topped by a steeple chaser. His plan was probably inspired by the church which kept Christ's tomb in Jerusalem. Templars are very popular people here, and has important and rich historic place in this area.
