Things to see in Ilhavo

Ilhavo is a small town on the coast of Portugal founded in the thirteenth century. Today it has a population close to 40,000 inhabitants, mostly engaged in tourism. Because of its long history, this area is full of cultural and historical monuments.

1. Church of Sao Salvador (Igreja Matriz de São Salvador)

This is outwardly quite simply building. The church has two bell towers. The facade is plastered and painted white. Beside the church is a chapel for baptisms with a baptistery decorated with tiles depicting the baptism of Christ. Inside is a six Tuscan stone pillars on each side. This religious building at first glance attracts peace and tranquility.

This is one of the most famous porcelain factory in Europe. Inside the factory there is a museum where visitors can learn all about the history of porcelain production as well as the modern techniques used today. Inside the factory there are two shops. In the main shop, visitors can buy the latest pieces of porcelain at very reasonable prices and in smaller shops you can buy pieces of porcelain from previous collections and years at an even better price.

5. Barra Lighthouse (Farol da Barra)

This is the highest lighthouse in Portugal and the second largest in the Iberian Peninsula. With him a fantastic view of the whole area.

The chapel was built on a platform with access from the stairs in stone. Construction of the temple began in early sixteenth century. The pulpit was completed during the seventeenth century and then passed the main altarpiece of the Monastery of Santa Ana de Coimbra. The chapel was renovated so it is in decent condition and attracts a lot of visitors.

4. Ilhavo Maritime Museum (Museu Marítimo de Ilhavo)

This museum reminds us of the hard days, hard work, travel and fears of fishermen and their families. The museum displays the production and processing of seaweed and salt, which is typical for this area. Inside the museum there is also multiple copies of different vessels in actual sizes. A special attraction is a large aquarium with different fish species, typical for this area.

Ilhavo is known worldwide for its Vista Alegre porcelain so it is a favorite location for shopping and a large number of tourists.
