What to do in Hoyerswerda

Hoyerswerda is a large district in the Saxon district of Bautzen. The third largest city of Upper Lusatia is located about 25 miles south of Cottbus and forty five miles north-east of Dresden. The city is part of the upper central cities of network Bautzen and Görlitz.

1. The Energy Factory Knappenrode

The Energy Factory Knappenrode

The Energy Factory Knappenrode is coal mining museum is one of the four sites of the Saxon Industrial Museum. It is located near south east of Hoyerswerda. From the end of First world war, raw lignite briquettes are manufactured here. The presses were partly electrically and partly driven by steam engines. Factory had its own power plant.

3. The St. John's Church

The St. John's Church

The St. John's Church is a Protestant church in the center of the old own of Hoyerswerda and it is considered one of the oldest buildings in the city. The Gothic hall was first mentioned in 1225. The tower is erected in the 16th century as a bell tower. Originally there was a small German church from the 17th century, which had to be demolished in 1850 before the church.

5. The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Stadium

The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Stadium

The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Stadium is a multipurpose sports facility in the city of Hoyerswerda. This location which was named after the initiator of the German gymnastics movement Jahn and is used among others for athletics events. The stadium was opened in 1959 and it is located in the north of the city.

2. Hoyerswerdaer Sculpture Symposium

Hoyerswerdaer Sculpture Symposium

The first Hoyerswerdaer Sculpture Symposium was a competition organized by Jürgen von Woyski in the summer of 1975 international symposium of artists from East Germany and Eastern Europe. The meeting was held under the title "Peace, happiness and friendship" in Hoyerswerda instead. The idea of the symposium had Woyski after a trip to Czechoslovakia. Co-organizer of the symposium was the Association of Artists of the GDR.

4. The Zoo Hoyerswerda

The Zoo Hoyerswerda

The Zoo Hoyerswerda is a zoological garden in Hoyerswerda. It was founded in 1956 and is the third largest zoo in Saxony. Covering an area of six hectares or over one thousand animals and over one hundred plants. The zoo has approximately 150,000 visitors and is located in the center of the old town. Kids will love the zoo, and you can see some species you never saw before.

Hoyerswerda existed since the 12th century. Hoyerswerda remained a small town. Population increased by ten times.
