What to do and see in Hobart

Hobart is the capital of Australian island state Tasmania and it is settled on the estuary of the Derwent River. Things to do in Hobart are interesting both for kids and adults.

1. Louisa's Walk

Louisa's Walk

This is a walk where you will meet Louisa Regan. She was Irish convict who was punished to seven years sentence in 1841 just for stealing loaf of bread. In 'Louisa's Walk' you will go on a journey with actors who will tell you the whole story in costumes.

3. Penitentiary Chapel

Penitentiary Chapel

Volunteers will lead you on tour lasting about 1 hour and 15 minutes explaining fascinating history of Penitentiary Chapel. It is very interesting it was used as a chapel for male convicts, then it went through modification as Hobart's Supreme Criminal Court. Entrance ticket is only 2 dollars but what you get is a life time experience.

5. Battery Point

Battery Point

It was named after a battery of guns that were established in 1818 to defend the city of Hobart against Russian and French invaders. Battery of guns have been removed, but the place has the most of the character of hundred years ago. There are many historic restaurant and houses that will bring you years and years back in time.

2. Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

In Aboriginal language 'Bonorong' (pronounced Bon-a-rong) means 'Native Companion. This sanctuary was established in 1981 for orphaned and injured wildlife and it is most popular wildlife park in Tasmania. In this park you can see animals which are extinct like Tassie Devil, Tasmanian Pademelon, Eastern Quoll and Tasmanian Bettong. Here are also many activities for younger and older children and it is sure you will enjoy it here.

4. Mount Wellington

Mount Wellington

It rises 1,271 above the sea level and the top is often covered with the snow due to cold winds. The top affords superb view on Derwent River, whole Hobart city and the wild forest close to the city. You can walk to the top or even cycle if you need more adrenaline rush.
