What to do in Göppingen

Göppingen is a city in Baden-Württemberg, 40 kilometers east of Stuttgart. It is a large district town and largest town of the district Göppingen and forms a center for the surrounding communities. With the communities Schlat, Waeschenbeuren and cheeks the city Göppingen has administrative matters.

1. The castle Hohenstaufen

The castle Hohenstaufen

The castle Hohenstaufen was the home castle of the Hohenstaufen family. It was built in the second half of the 11th century and destroyed in 1525. Castle is always pretty sight to see. It connects itself with history and some ancient times. It is certainly interesting place not only for adult ones, but for children too.

3. The Protestant church

The Protestant church

The Protestant church, a church choir dates from the years 1618-1619. Built according to the plans of Heinrich Schickhardt, it has early 20th century Art Nouveau elements. The Protestant Church is in Faurndau district and it was built in 1200 and is one of the most important late Romanesque buildings.

5. Göppingen castle

Göppingen castle

Göppingen castle is a four-wing Renaissance building, built in 1566 by A. Tretsch and M. Berwart. In the 18th century the facade was changed dramatically. From four stair towers, three are preserved. Main staircase was built in 1562.

2. The Oberhof Church

The Oberhof Church

The Oberhof Church is the landmark of the city. It was Roman villa for early medieval predecessors and a late Romanesque basilica structure. Construction of the existing church was not realized. In many details the influence of the Ulm school can be seen. Many extensions have changed. Wall paintings in the choir, the choir stalls and a carved crucifix were preserved.

4. The Barbarossa Church

The Barbarossa Church

The Barbarossa Church in Hohenstaufen neighborhood was built 15th century. There were previously in the same place a chapel. Until the mid-19th century, the Protestant church once bore the name of St. Jakob. Today the church is used for Catholic services.
