Things to do and see in Clichy-sous-Bois

Clichy-sous-Bois is located in Seine-Saint-Denis department in the Île-de-France region. This town has twenty nine thousand and seven hundred and fifty inhabitants. Clichy-sous-Bois is part of the eastern suburbs of Paris and it is only fifteen kilometers distant from its center.

1. Église Saint-Denis

Église Saint-Denis (Church of Saint-Denis) was built in eighteenth century. Nothing left from that church. The church was rebuilt in eighteenth and also in nineteenth century. The church has a very simple plan with a single nave and a flat apse. The building façade is characteristic for neo-Romanesque churches.

3. Castel de Blois

Castel de Blois (Castle of Blois) was constructed in 1900. Its architecture looks like some royal palace of the first French Renaissance. Picturesque style evokes the eclectic style of the castles of nineteenth century. On the facade are some grafted animal figures, gargoyles, monstrous snails and embryonic forms.

5. Orangerie

The orangery of the old castle was built in 1740 by the will of Le Bas de Gourmont, mayor of Clichy from 1791 to 1794. It was rebuilt in 1783. Façade is punctuated by arches separated by large Ionic pilasters.

2. Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges

Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges

Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges was built in nineteenth century. It was built on the location of primitive oratory from thirteenth century. After the fire in the chapel in 1791, it was rebuilt in 1808. In 1865, the church was enlarged and supplemented by a small cupola. Inside, visitors can see a wooden statue of Our Lady of the Angels, a replica of the miraculous sculpture from the thirteenth century.

4. Château de la Terrasse

Today Château de la Terrasse (Castle Terrace) was built in nineteenth century. It was built on the foundations of the building of the first commander of the Order of the Temple that was built in 1268. Since that period, this castle was built and rebuilt several times. The last demolition of the castle was at the end of the nineteenth century. The building was extensively damaged by the Prussian during occupation in 1871. Greatly reduced in the latest changes from the beginning of this century, the present castle Terrace is the ultimate state of the art.

This town has a very long history. There are traces of settlements in this area from the Roman period. This area is also famous by its woods. The woods are covering one quarter of the area of the town. Clichy-sous-Bois is very popular tourist destination.
