Must see in Carpentras

Carpentras is a small French town with little more than thirty thousand and three hundred inhabitants and it is capital of the Comtat Venaissin. It is situated on the banks of the river Auzon. Carpentras is located in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in south east France.

1. La cathédrale Saint-Siffrein

La cathédrale Saint-Siffrein

St. Siffrein Cathedral was built on the ruins of the Roman church. The cathedral was constructed in Southern Gothic architectural style. It has stained glass windows, gargoyles and finely carved arches. The current building was built by the will of Pope Benedict XIII. The work lasted for more then a century, from 1404 to 1519. Inside, among other things, visitors will find the painted panel of the Coronation of the Virgin, stained glass windows from the fifteenth century, precious altar of Genoa marble and exceptional ironwork sculptures. The Treasury also contains the Holy Mors that was brought from Constantinople by the Crusaders.

3. L'aqueduct

L'aqueduct

Carpentras has many fountains from the fourteenth century. All these fountains are fed with water by a medieval aqueduct. It was restored in the first half of the eightennth century. The aqueduct is composed of 48 arches, it is 729 meters long and a it has a height of 23 meters. This building has such a great elegance that is often mistaken for a Roman aqueduct.

5. Le musée Comtadin-Duplessis

Le musée Comtadin-Duplessis

The Comtadin-Duplessis Museum presents the municipal collections of fine arts. The inside stairs are the work of nineteenth and twentieth century artists of Vaison. The floor is decorated with works of western european schools artist from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. At the end of the great gallery, visitors may experience the highlight of this museum: the reinterpretation of the library-museum founded by Dom Inguimbert of Malachi, bishop and benefactor of Carpentras.

2. L’église Notre-Dame de l’Observance

L’église Notre-Dame de l’Observance

The Notre-Dame de l'Observance was built at the middle of the sixteenth century. It is established as a parish church in 1792. The church was restored at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This church is designed in Gothic Revival style. A beautiful portal flanked by Ionic columns opens onto a square vestibule. Stained glass from Lyons is a fine example of Renaissance architecture.

4. Le musée Sobirats

Le musée Sobirats

The museum Sobirats is the museum of decorative arts. It is housed in the mansion from the eighteenth century. Visitors will discover a typical Louis XV, Louis XVI and Empire furniture; Provencal furniture; Aubusson tapestries and paintings of landscapes and portraits.

This area was a commercial site that was used by Greek merchants in ancient times so it has a rich history ant it is very popular among tourists.
