Things to do in Barcelos

Barcelos is a city in the north of Portugal, which was established at the time of the Roman Empire.

1. Ceramics Museum (Museu de Olaria)

Ceramics Museum was founded in 1963 after donating a valuable collection of ceramics by ethnographers Joaquim Paes de Selles Vilas Boas. The collection was expanded and eventually opened for viewing in 1995. Inside the museum, visitors can see all kinds of ceramics made in Portugal. The museum owns more than 700 artifacts deployed in three exhibition halls of the total size of 2,000 square meters. In the museum there are conference room, rooms for classes and cafeteria.

Baroque garden is very beautiful and romantic garden in which every detail is very pedatno done. All vegetation in the garden is arranged in regular geometric patterns and all the same height. The garden was designed back in the eighteenth century as part of the Church of Jesus' birth (Templo do Bom Jesus da Cruz) and is located right across from Largo da Porta Nova. Within the garden there are several gardens in the Rococo style, the magnificent gateway between the obelisk, two false facade with windows and a fountain.

This monument is the end of freedom. This statue was erected in honor of volunteer firefighters and is the first such monument in Portugal.

This is a very beautiful building from the XV century built overlooking the river Calvado. The palace was declared a national monument of Portugal. It is a stone building with two towers on each side. The windows are made in the medieval Gothic style.

The Castle of the Counts of Barcelos is the first thing you will see every visitor to the city who come to him through the medieval bridge over the river Cavado. The palace was built in the fifteenth century in the Gothic style of medieval established palace and more like a castle than a palace. The castle was built by Don Alfonso (the illegitimate son of King Joao I). In the eighteenth century, the castle was abandoned and is now in ruins. Today it is a place of archaeological research and has been declared a National Monument.
