5 things to do and see in Balkány

Balkány is a town with 6,800 inhabitants in eastern Hungary, 40 kilometers northeast of Debricina. This city is known for its agriculture, but also as a tourist destination due to its rich history.

1. Castle Gens (A Gencsy kastély)

Castle Gens is an interesting structure in the shape of a rectangle whose central portion is covered with glass. Designed in 1774 by Samuel Gens. The castle was built according to the designs of the Italian architect Salvatore Apra. The building was expanded and added it was a floor in the second half of the 19th century. This castle has an area of 770 square meters. Gens Samuel is buried in the nearby village of Kalo. His neoclassical tomb was built by his son, 1811.

In May 1936, the Minister of Religion and Public Education has ordered the formation of parishes in the area. The church was completed in November 1937 according to plans by architect Sandor Hevesia. The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Hungary.

This villa is one of a number of former aristocratic mansion, located in this region. Villa Pelican is a very impressive building. It is located in the center of the village and it is currently housed a police station.

The most important medieval remains from this region are located in today's Protestant church. The church was built in the first half of the 14th century. The facade of the church is build in Romanesque style. After the Reformation, it was probably not used until the end of the 17th century. Then, city counsil repaired the roof and added a bell tower and the church again began to be constantly used. East facade of the church dates from before the 19th century.

The church was built as a chapel in 1977. In 1990 the chapel was enlarged and the capacity was tripled. Sanctuary, transept, vestry, chancel and tower has been added. A few years ago icons with carvings and paintings of Joseph Gregory Dr.Lasla are rearranged. In 2002 the church received a new comfortable benches.

The city was founded in the first half of the thirteenth century, in the year 1214. Thanks to this, the city has many historical sites interesting for tourists. Its popularity contributes to the climate in this area. Balkány has two thousand hours of sunshine per year which is in second place in Hungary.
