What to do and see in Ashton-under-Lyne

Ashton-under-Lyne has a population of over forty thousands. It is a business town in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside. It was a piece of Lancashire, and it lies on the north bank of the River Tame. It is near Manchester center.

1. Ashton town centre

Ashton town centre is the biggest in Tameside. It was created in the Victorian period and only first structures have survived. This part of town is secured by Tameside Council as a preservation area. It has open market which was made in the medieval period. It is open six days a week. Ranch market is the biggest in the area and it is open for weekends. St. Michael's Church is a Grade I Listed Building. It is one of over one hundred surviving medieval structures in the North West. The congregation dates since thirteenth century and it was renovated in fifteenth century. It is interesting to many tourists and if you like this type of buildings, don't miss it.

Ashton Town Hall dates from 1840 when it was opened. It has interesting structures from ancient times. It has function of regulatory purposes and administrative area. It is a Grade II recorded building. After the Ashton-under-Lyne lose its metropolitan district, this hall become Museum of the Manchester Regiment. The gallery displays relics from Manchester Regiment.

Ashton Arcades shopping plaza opened in 1995 and it is one of the biggest in the world. It has golf course is in its initial stages, and it located near Ashton hospital. IKEA has its shopping mall here too, one of the tallest in England.

4. Portland Basin distribution center

After the Ashton Canal was shut Portland Basin distribution center become a museum. First piece of the Heritage Center and Museum opened on the first carpet of the warehouse. The renovation of building was finished in 1999. It has displays of social, modern, and political history. It has been utilized a few times as a shooting area for movie production.

Ashton-under-Lyne is a proof of stone age and viking era and its surroundings. It dates since Anglo-Saxon period, and it signifies settlement by remains of trees. During the Middle Ages, Ashton-under-Lyne had Old Hall which was held by the de Asshetons, the Lords of the Manor.
