1. Castle at Altenburg
Castle at Altenburg is a former residential palace of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. It is located in the center of Altenburg in Thuringia and houses the Castle and Playing Card Museum. It is great place for cultural events. The castle is the original location of the Altenburger prince robbery. It is the biggest castle in Thuringia and one of the most remarkable one.
3. Natural History Museum
The Mauritianum is the natural history museum of Thuringia East Regional Museum with collections and research of nature between White Elster and Mulde. It offers displays of geology, paleontology and zoology with over 350,000 objects. Collection was created by the Natural History Society.
5. Altenburger Skat Fountain
Skat Fountain was built in 1903. It was an omage to the man who invented Skat game. It is the only monument dedicated to this game. This is not a place for children only, there are so many dedicated fans of Skat game from all over the world. Skat Fountain was added almost fifty years ago.
2. Castle Museum Altenburg
Area in Altenburg Castle was birth place of the first playing card museum in the world. Castle Museum offers unique historical documents. Until the Second World War the museum had several thousands historic card games developed into a treasure chamber. Collection today is amazing and thrilling at the same time.
4. St. Bartholomew's Church
St. Bartholomew's Church is the oldest church in Altenburg. It was build in Romanesque hall church on the site where Hussites attacked. Gothic hall church was build besides two towers. Towers collapsed one hundred years after that, but new tower was erected.
As a cultural gem Altenburg is still not open wided for tourist. But, you are welcomed to discover it because town is not crowded over touristic season.
