Ales is the town with forty thousand citizens in the Gard department in the Languedoc-Rousssillon region in France. Ales was the important Huguenot centre in this part of France in XVIth century.

The Cathedral of St. Jean the Baptist is the most impressive site in Ales. The cathedral is built on the remains of an old Carolingian church, which was located on the site of a Gallo-Roman temple. The nave of the cathedral is covered with cross-ribbed vaults. Its height reaches twenty meters. The choir is surrounded by an imposing colonnade in Louis XVI style. The paintings and decorations of walls and vaults are in poor condition, but still impressive.
