Must do and see in Abbeville

Abbeville is a town in the Somme department in Picardie in northern France. Thanks to its privileged geographical situation as well as the importance of its architectural and natural heritage, Abbeville has become a very important tourist centre.

1. Church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre

Church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre

Church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre has the imposing tower. Romanesque arches portal is surmounted by carved corbels grimacing heads. According to tradition, the shelter of the portal was once used to protect the poor travelers. Nave is composed of a single aisle ended with a flat apse. The building has undergone many changes over the centuries. Inside the building visitors will find the statue of Saint Julien. This saint becomes the patron saint of travelers, pilgrims, hospitals and innkeepers, whose signs often relate to his story. Inside is the Tombstone Raoul Joannet. This tombstone of Joannet Raoul and his lady is one of the few who survived the Revolution. The knight is armed with a sword and a shield. He was the lord of the territory of Abbeville and Arrancourt.

3. Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The church was built in the fifteenth century. Today, only the bell-tower, pillars, nave archivolts, two side aisles and St Sepulchre's chapel remained of the original building. This church is built in the classic Gothic style.

This fine column surmounted by a Christ iron is drawn to the center of the small public cemetery. Lotus and leaves lance-shaped, finely carved, climb along the column. It was probably recovered from a chapel or a church destroyed.

Following the current water supply, this masonry pond, which was used for watering and water supply in case of fire, is no longer essential to the inhabitants. It nevertheless remains a familiar part of the landscape and local heritage.

4. Boucher de Perthes museum

Boucher de Perthes museum

Jacques Boucher de Perthes was a Customs Inspector and amateur archeologist. He established the existence of Paleolithic man, a contemporary of the great mammoths. Part of the collection of the museum that bears his name is devoted to his discoveries. There are also medieval sculptures, a sculpture by Camille Claudel and a fine silver Virgin and Child.

This town is a great location for fishing and waterfowl hunting. Abbeville is at the centre of a natural and preserved environment. This small town has about thirty thousand inhabitants.
